Common Questions
Everything You Need to Know About Our Coops and Chicken Care
1. What makes your coops different from store-bought options?
Every coop we build is handcrafted with quality materials like pressure-treated lumber, galvanized hardware, and weather-resistant finishes. We’ve raised 41 hens ourselves, so our designs solve real problems that mass-produced coops overlook—better ventilation, stronger construction, and thoughtful layouts for both chickens and owners.
2. How do I know which coop size is right for my flock?
Plan for 3 to 4 square feet per hen inside the coop and 8-10 square feet per hen in the run. Our Open Chicken Run suits 10-15 hens, the Elevated Coop handles 8-10 hens, and our Premium models accommodate up to 15 hens comfortably. We’re happy to help you choose the perfect fit.
3. Do you offer custom designs or modifications?
Yes! As a family-owned business, we can customize dimensions, add extra features like solar ventilation or automatic doors, adjust colors, and adapt layouts to fit your space. Just share your vision and we’ll work together to make it happen.
4. What's included with my coop purchase?
Each coop comes fully assembled and ready to use, including nesting boxes, roost bars, secure latches, predator-proof mesh, and exterior-grade finishes. Our Premium and Integrated Run models include additional features like foldable walls or solar-powered doors (as specified in each product).
5. How long does it take to build and deliver?
Custom coops typically take 2-4 weeks to build, depending on complexity and current projects. We’ll provide a timeline estimate when you order. Delivery is available throughout Lehigh Acres and surrounding areas in Florida.
6. What kind of maintenance do your coops require?
We recommend a light cleaning weekly (remove droppings, refresh bedding) and a deep clean monthly. Annually, inspect hardware and reapply protective sealant or paint if needed. Our coops are built to last with minimal upkeep.
7. Are your coops suitable for Florida's climate?
Absolutely! We design specifically for Florida’s heat, humidity, and weather. Our coops feature proper ventilation, weather-resistant materials, shade structures, and drainage considerations. Some models include foldable walls for temperature control during cooler months.
8. What chicken breeds do you recommend for beginners?
For families, we love Buff Orpingtons, Silkies, Cochins, Australorps, and Plymouth Rocks—they’re friendly, calm, and easy to handle. For Florida heat, consider Leghorns, Sussex, Rhode Island Reds, or Easter Eggers, which tolerate high temperatures well.
9. Do I need a rooster for my hens to lay eggs?
No! Hens lay eggs naturally without a rooster. You only need a rooster if you want to hatch fertile eggs and raise chicks. Most backyard flocks are happier and quieter without one.
10. How do you protect against predators?
We use a ½-inch galvanized hardware cloth (not chicken wire), secure metal latches on all doors, and elevated or reinforced bases. We recommend burying fencing 12 inches underground and always locking coops at night for maximum protection.
11. Can I see examples of your previous work?
Yes! Here at our gallery and you can check our Instagram @chickensavesouthcoops and Facebook page (Chicken’s Ave South Coops) for photos of completed projects, customer testimonials, and updates from our workshop. We’re proud to share every coop we build.
12. Do you provide guidance for first-time chicken owners?
Absolutely! We offer free pre-purchase consultations covering coop sizing, breed selection, placement, feeding basics, and daily care routines. We want you to start your backyard flock with confidence and all the information you need.
